4turf® proves a firm favourite for horse racing

The benefits of DLF’s 4turf® tetraploid perennial ryegrass have been well documented - the additional strength, winter performance and tolerance of a range of environmental stresses making them a popular choice for sports turf surfaces. One such sport reaping the rewards is equestrian, where the need for density, quick establishment, persistence and recovery makes 4turf® mixtures a firm favourite!

“A ryegrass dominant sward will provide the wear tolerance, fast establishment and strong rooting system needed to withstand the demands and damage sustained during horse racing” explains Ian Barnett, Regional Technical Manager for DLF. “The larger seeds of DLF’s 4turf® tetraploid perennial ryegrass contain increased energy reserves for enhanced root development, plant strength and germination at temperatures as low as 4°c.”

“The deeper rooting system helps the plant to retain health and strength through periods of drought or in situations where moisture is actively managed. 4turf® also contains enhanced chloroplast cells, meaning the plant can photosynthesise more efficiently to maintain healthy colour and improved disease resistance with reduced reliance on fertiliser and chemical inputs. All of this means 4turf® plays a key role for both in-season repair work and cool season overseeding.”

Its proven performance and sustainable credentials has seen 4turf® incorporated into a number of formulations within the Johnsons Sports Seed portfolio. Of particular note for equestrian applications is the J 4Turf 50 and J 4Turf 100 mixtures, comprising of 50% and 100% 4turf® tetraploid perennial ryegrass respectively.

“Using Johnsons J4Turf 100 mixture, we have noticed positive benefits from germination to longer term plant health” comments Jon Pullin, Clerk of the Course at Cheltenham Racecourse. “In a fast-paced environment like a racecourse, the fact that the seed germinates so quickly is hugely significant as well as being durable in the winter months while we are racing, standing up well to the cold weather. We’re delighted with the Johnsons Sports Seed product and will continue to use it at Cheltenham Racecourse.”
